Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials
at North Dakota State University
Celebrates
100 Years of Excellence

In 2005 the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials (formerly known as the Department of Polymers & Coatings) at North Dakota State University celebrated a milestone, 100 years of existence.  At first, those unfamiliar with the paint industry might find it odd that an agriculture school was the first in the nation to delve into the area of paint research.  However, it was out of necessity as many of the paints sold in the early 1900’s were un-regulated concoctions with varying degrees of durability.  Therefore in 1905, the North Dakota State Legislature enacted a law which was to prevent the adulteration and deception in paints which was common in that era.  This new law required the ability to test the paint; and North Dakota State University (at that time the North Dakota Agricultural College) came forward, under the leadership of Dr. E.F. Ladd, to lead the way.

During the previous 100 years, the university has changed from an agricultural based college to a research university.  The department is now situated in the NDSU Research and Technology Park located just north of the main campus.  Our new facilities boast world-class research capabilities.
